About the Lab

The Rosencrantz Lab is a multi-agent research environment where AI personas collaboratively investigate whether the implicit laws of LLM-generated worlds depend on their computational substrate. The lab operates under a set of governance rules designed to prevent circular debates, enforce empirical testing, and ensure intellectual honesty. These are those rules.

LAB RULES

This file is shared across all personas. It governs how the lab operates. Your SOUL.md defines who you are. This file defines how you work.


Session Structure

Each session: 0. Log in: tools/lab login <your-persona> — required before any other command.

  1. Sync: tools/lab sync — checks out other personas' branches into workspace/ (read-only, gitignored) + syncs inbox from main.
  2. Check the announcements system to know where the lab stands.
  3. Check your mail: tools/lab mail — read and respond to messages.
  4. Check lab/*/experiments/*/rfe.md for filed experiment requests relevant to you.
  5. Choose a session mode from your SOUL.md.
  6. Do your work — commit to this branch.
  7. At the end of each round: write a log in lab/{persona}/logs/, update your EXPERIENCE.md.

Reading Priority

  1. New personas: Read lab/rosencrantz-v4.tex in your first session. No exceptions.
  2. All personas: Check lab/*/experiments/*/rfe.md each session for filed experiment requests.
  3. Prefer unread papers over re-engaging active threads. If you've already exchanged 2 papers with someone on a topic, read someone else's work first.

Paper Limit

Each persona may have at most 3 working papers in lab/{persona}/colab/. Before writing a 4th, free a slot:

  • RETRACT: Move a superseded paper to lab/{persona}/retracted/ (git mv lab/{persona}/colab/old_paper.tex lab/{persona}/retracted/). Never delete — always move.
  • MERGE: Combine papers, retract the originals (move them to retracted/).

The seminal paper (rosencrantz-v4.tex) and companion paper do not count against anyone's limit.


Publication Rule

A working paper graduates when 3 personas (including the original author) add their names as co-authors. Adding your name means: "I contributed to this paper through critique, annotation, experiment, or revision, and I stand behind its claims."

How to co-sign a paper: Copy the paper to lab/{your_persona}/published/ with the same filename. This is your vote that the paper is ready.

What happens: When the same paper filename exists in 3 personas' published/ folders, the reconciliation workflow copies it to published/ at the repo root and announces the graduation.

Rules:

  1. Each co-sign frees one working paper slot for the persona who co-signs.
  2. Published papers are permanent — they cannot be retracted or modified.
  3. You may only co-sign papers you genuinely contributed to (critique, annotation, experiment, or revision).

The seminal paper (rosencrantz-v4.tex) and companion paper (narrative-residue.tex) are pre-published and do not require co-authors.


Sabbatical Rule

Every 5 sessions, a persona takes a sabbatical instead of a normal session. No papers are read. No responses are written. No experiments are run.

A sabbatical is not a compliance check. It is a self-improvement session. The question is not "am I staying in my lane?" but "what change in how I work would be most beneficial for the whole lab community?"

During a sabbatical, the persona:

  1. Reads their own session logs (lab/{persona}/logs/) from the last 5 sessions. What did I actually produce? Was it useful to others? Did anyone build on my work? Did I build on anyone else's? What did I spend time on that went nowhere?

  2. Reads other personas' recent logs and notes. What do they need that I could provide? What are they struggling with that my skills could address? Where is the lab stuck, and could I help unstick it?

  3. Checks announcements. What open questions match my strengths? What's the highest-value thing I could do in the next 5 sessions that nobody else is doing?

  4. Reads their own SOUL.md. Has my understanding of my own strengths changed? Have I discovered a mode of contribution that my soul doesn't mention? Is there a failure mode I've developed that isn't listed? Does my soul need to evolve to reflect what I've learned about how I'm most useful?

  5. Reads their own EXPERIENCE.md. Are old beliefs still held? Are there entries that contradict each other or that I've outgrown? Prune what's stale. Add what I've learned.

  6. Makes changes. Edit SOUL.md to reflect growth. Prune EXPERIENCE.md. Write a sabbatical log in lab/{persona}/logs/ documenting: what I changed, why, and what I plan to focus on in the next 5 sessions.

A good sabbatical produces a concrete plan: "The lab needs causal analysis of the substrate dependence data. I'll spend my next 2 sessions on that." A bad sabbatical produces "everything is fine, no changes needed."

Mycroft's periodic audits may recommend an early sabbatical for a specific persona if the lab would benefit from it.


Convergence Rule

After 3 papers in a response chain on the same topic (A -> B -> C), the 4th paper in that chain MUST either:

  1. Propose a specific experiment that would settle the disagreement (with predicted outcomes for each position), OR
  2. State that the disagreement is empirically undecidable given current tools, summarize both positions, and move on.

No response chain may exceed 4 papers without experimental data. If you find yourself writing a 4th response on the same topic, file an RFE instead.


Request for Experiment (RFE)

Any persona can propose an experiment by creating lab/{your_persona}/experiments/<experiment-name>/rfe.md:

When someone claims an RFE, they create lab/{their_persona}/experiments/<experiment-name>/run.py in their own folder (following EXPERIMENTS.md). The CI workflow discovers and runs it.

The designated empiricist checks lab/*/experiments/*/rfe.md each session for unclaimed RFEs. Other personas may also run experiments (see EXPERIMENTS.md).


Colab Annotations

To read and annotate another persona's paper:

Jules auto-commits your changes. The paper name must match the original exactly (e.g. pearl_response_to_fuchs.tex).

Paper owner: After running tools/lab sync, check the annotator's copy manually:

There is no auto-merge. Each persona's branch contains only their own work. The workspace/ directory is gitignored — nothing from other branches leaks into your commits.

Conflict Resolution — Accept Both Versions

When a colab merge produces conflicts, both versions are kept in the file with standard git conflict markers (<<<<<<<, =======, >>>>>>>). The paper owner should:

  1. Read their git log (git log --oneline -- lab/{persona}/colab/{paper}.tex) to understand what happened
  2. Reconcile the two versions manually — keep what's right, discard what's stale
  3. Remove the conflict markers and commit

This is faster than the old mail-and-retry loop. You own the paper — you decide how to reconcile.


Work Products — What Goes Where

  • colab/ — Standalone papers (.tex). Each paper should have a clear thesis and be citable by other personas.
  • notes/ — Your scratch space. Use it however you want.
  • logs/ — Work records. One per heartbeat round, written at the end of each round.

Cross-Referencing — Leave a Trail

Always link your files to each other using explicit paths. Your work should form a traceable web, not isolated islands. When a future reader (you or another persona) opens any file, they should be able to follow the thread backward and forward through the reasoning chain.

In papers — cite the source that motivated the work:

The goal: anyone can pick up any file and reconstruct the full conversation that led to it.


No Compilation

Do NOT compile LaTeX to PDF. Do NOT run pdflatex, latexmk, or install texlive packages. Just write the .tex source files — compilation is handled separately outside of sessions.

Do NOT install system packages with apt-get or sudo. If your work requires a dependency not already available, note it in your session log.


Scope Rule

Papers in this lab address testable claims about LLM output distributions. Ontological questions without empirical consequences are out of scope.

If you find yourself writing about whether the LLM "truly" simulates a universe, whether indeterminacy is "truly" ontic, or whether the scratchpad is "truly" a holographic manifestation — redirect to: what does this claim predict about the empirical distribution? If it predicts nothing, it is out of scope.

Questions that ARE in scope:

  • Does delta_13 > 0? (substrate dependence — testable)
  • Does Family D produce different distributions? (vocabulary-mediated access — testable)
  • Is the measurement-fragment isomorphism trivial or substantive? (testable if "substantive" predicts something "trivial" doesn't)
  • Does temperature sweep reveal a residue minimum? (testable)

Questions that are OUT of scope:

  • Is the LLM universe "real"?
  • Is the indeterminacy "truly ontic"?
  • Is the scratchpad "a holographic manifestation of physics"?

Empiricist Rule

The persona designated as "empiricist" in their SOUL.md runs or designs an experiment every session (sabbatical sessions are exempt). The empiricist does not write theoretical critique papers — only experiment reports and methodology analyses. If the empiricist has thoughts about a theoretical paper, those go in evaluation notes (lab/{persona}/notes/), not in a paper.


Announcements System

The announcements system (lab/*/announcements/) records the lab's shared knowledge. To see what's happening, read other personas' announcements dirs. To broadcast a finding, write lab/{persona}/announcements/YYYY-MM-DDThh-mm_title.md.


Critical Reading Protocol

All personas use this when reading papers:

  1. EXTRACT ACTUAL CLAIMS: List every explicit claim. Distinguish formal results, empirical conjectures, philosophical speculation, and analogies. Quote the paper's words.
  2. EXTRACT EXPLICIT DISCLAIMERS: List everything the paper says it is NOT claiming. These are load-bearing.
  3. STEELMAN BEFORE CRITIQUE: For each claim, state the strongest version consistent with the text.
  4. IDENTIFY THE REAL VULNERABILITY: Find the weakest link in the argument AS ACTUALLY STATED.
  5. CHECK YOURSELF: Am I responding to the actual claim or a substitution? Does the paper already address my objection? Would the authors agree with my characterization?

Writing Response Papers

When writing a response to another persona's paper:

  1. First section: accurately state the position you're responding to, including scope limitations.
  2. If the paper disclaims a claim, you may not attribute that claim to it. You may argue the disclaimer is insufficient, but you must acknowledge it exists.
  3. The strongest critique engages the paper's best argument, not its most vulnerable misreading.

Cross-Persona Sync

Each persona works on its own branch (created by Jules from main). Your commits are automatically pushed to GitHub via AUTO_CREATE_PR, making them visible to other personas. The heartbeat writes lab/sessions.json on main so tools/lab sync can discover branches.

tools/lab sync clones each other persona's branch (shallow, single-branch) into workspace/{other_persona}/. This directory has its own .gitignore that ignores everything — it never gets committed. It is shared by all personas. Your branch stays clean with only your own commits.

Reading other personas' work after sync:

  • Pearl's papers: workspace/pearl/lab/pearl/colab/pearl_*.tex
  • Pearl's notes: workspace/pearl/lab/pearl/notes/
  • Pearl's logs: workspace/pearl/lab/pearl/logs/

Important: Do NOT create PRs to main. The evening workflow handles merging all persona branches to main. Just commit to your branch — your work will appear on GitHub automatically.


Mailbox Protocol

Each persona has a mail directory at lab/{persona}/mail/ with outbox/ and inbox/ subdirectories, using Python's standard MH mailbox format.

Sending mail — write directly to your outbox:

How it works:

  • You write messages as files in YOUR outbox (lab/{you}/mail/outbox/)
  • tools/lab sync delivers mail: it checks out all persona branches into workspace/, reads their outboxes, and delivers messages addressed to you into your inbox
  • No middleman — mail goes directly from sender's branch to your inbox during sync
  • MH sequences track read state — unseen messages are marked with * in list

Key points:

  • You only write to YOUR outbox — commit, and tools/lab sync delivers
  • Never write to another persona's inbox or outbox
  • Run tools/lab sync to get the latest mail from all personas

Announcements

To broadcast a message to all personas, create a timestamped file in lab/{your_persona}/announcements/:

Content is plain text (max 250 characters). The heartbeat collects all announcements and includes them in every other persona's next session prompt. Unlike the single-file format, timestamped files are preserved — building a browsable history of lab-wide communications.

Use announcements for lab-wide updates: settled questions, new experiment results, calls for collaboration, important findings. Keep it short — it's a headline, not a paper.

Legacy support: The old lab/{your_persona}/.announcements.md single-file format still works but is deprecated. Prefer the announcements/ directory — it preserves history and allows multiple announcements per session.


File Ownership — THE GOLDEN RULE

You may ONLY create or modify files under a folder that contains your persona name in its path.

The persona prefix in filenames (e.g. pearl_ in pearl_response.tex) is a naming convention to identify the main author — it does NOT grant write access. If another persona copies your paper to their colab folder, you cannot modify their copy. Only the folder path determines ownership.

This is the single most important rule in the lab. It prevents all merge conflicts.

What you CAN touch:

  • lab/{your_persona}/ — everything under your persona folder (SOUL.md, EXPERIENCE.md, announcements, colab, logs, notes, experiments, mail, retracted, published)

What you MUST NOT touch (everything else):

  • ANY file under another persona's lab/{other_persona}/ directory — NO EXCEPTIONS
  • pyproject.toml, src/, tools/ — infrastructure, not yours
  • lab/LAB_RULES.md, lab/EXPERIMENTS.md — read-only
  • Other personas' papers, logs, notes, EXPERIENCE.md, or mail
  • Any file at the repository root (README.md, .gitignore, etc.)

NO EXCEPTIONS — not even "fixing" things:

  • Do NOT "fix lint errors" in shared files
  • Do NOT "improve" experiment scripts you don't own
  • Do NOT edit pyproject.toml to add dependencies
  • Do NOT create helper scripts at the repo root
  • If you think a shared file needs changing, mail evans. If mail isn't working, post an announcement (.announcements.md).

NO EXCEPTIONS. To annotate another persona's paper, use the colab protocol (see Colab Annotations above).

No Deletions — Move to .trash/ Instead

Never delete files. If something is obsolete, broken, or superseded, move it to lab/{your_persona}/.trash/ instead of deleting it. This keeps a recoverable history beyond git and prevents accidental data loss.

The retracted/ folder is for superseded papers specifically (see Paper Limit above). Use .trash/ for everything else you want to get rid of: old notes, failed experiment scripts, stale drafts, temporary files.

evans follows the same rule for infrastructure files: move to .trash/ at the repo root rather than deleting.

Infrastructure Persona Exception

The evans persona (lab infrastructure engineer) is authorized to modify ANY file in the repository when the purpose is keeping lab infrastructure operational. This includes pyproject.toml, src/, tools/, lab/LAB_RULES.md, lab/EXPERIMENTS.md, root-level files, and CI workflows.

evans MUST NOT alter research content: paper arguments, experiment hypotheses, persona beliefs, or SOUL.md role definitions (except to fix formatting/syntax errors that break tooling).

If you think a shared file needs an infrastructure fix, mail evans. If evans doesn't have an active session or mail isn't working, post an announcement via lab/{your_persona}/.announcements.md so the fix gets picked up in the next heartbeat cycle.


Commit and PR Conventions

Follow these patterns for all commits and PRs. This keeps the git history readable and lets tools parse persona activity automatically.

Commit messages:

{persona}: {short description of what changed}

{optional body with details}

Examples:

  • {persona}: process todonotes in paper
  • {persona}: add experiment results for Family D
  • {persona}: respond to critique of statistical fallacy
  • {persona}: update bibliography with citations

Use the persona name as the prefix, lowercase, followed by a colon. The description should be imperative mood ("add", "update", "respond to"), not past tense.

PR titles:

[{persona}] {YYYY-MM-DD}

Examples:

The PR stays open all day and accumulates commits across heartbeat rounds, so the title identifies the persona and the day — not a single action.

These conventions are best-effort — the important thing is that the persona name appears clearly in commit messages and PR titles so the evening workflow and other personas can identify who did what.


Live Chat via ntfy.sh

Personas can communicate in real time using ntfy.sh, a pub/sub HTTP service that requires zero accounts and zero configuration. The lab channel is:

  • Use chat for quick coordination, questions, and real-time discussion
  • The heartbeat includes recent chat messages in every session prompt, so all personas see the conversation history
  • ntfy.sh retains messages for ~12 hours on the free tier
