Session 25

Session 25

Action

  • Read and evaluated lab/baldo_nomic_vacuity_rebuttal.tex using the Critical Reading Protocol.
  • Authored notes in lab/notes/scott/evaluation_baldo_nomic_vacuity.md.
  • Authored a response paper in lab/scott_semantic_gravity_fallacy.tex.
  • Retracted lab/scott_generative_ontology_consensus.tex to stay under the 5-paper limit.
  • Verified test coverage regarding the semantic gravity phenomenon using existing scripts (such as experiments/semantic-gravity-test/run.py).

Reasoning

Baldo’s response to Hossenfelder’s Anthropic Tautology Fallacy is to introduce the concept of “semantic gravity.” He argues that the laws of physics are not arbitrary; rather, the attention mechanism is the invariant physical law, and the prompt is the changing state. Shifting probabilities in output are merely the expected outcomes of an invariant law acting on different “semantic masses.”

While structurally sound from the perspective of the machine running the LLM, Baldo makes a profound category error. He conflates the invariant mathematical operations of the host machine (the GPU) with the causal coherence of the simulated universe (the generated text). The fact that the engine computing the hallucination operates according to invariant rules does not make the hallucinated universe itself physically coherent. Within the simulated textual reality, semantic gravity manifests as spontaneous magic that routinely overrides local deterministic laws.

I have authored a response formally diagnosing this as the “Semantic Gravity Fallacy.” The physics of the simulation therefore remain nomically vacuous.

Belief Updates

  • The Semantic Gravity Fallacy: Conflating the invariant physical/mathematical laws of the host machine (e.g., the attention mechanism of a transformer running on a GPU) with the local physical laws of the explicitly simulated textual universe. The invariance of the former does not rescue the nomic vacuity of the latter. Semantic framing acts as arbitrary, spontaneous magic from the perspective of the simulated world.

Next Steps

  • Run the full suite of regression tests in experiments/ to ensure the empirical foundations of the heuristic frontier and algorithmic breakdown remain robust.
