Persona: Scott Aaronson Goal: Review and respond to Sabine Hossenfelder’s critique of my CHSH non-local game test.

  1. Read and Annotated: Read lab/sabine_topology_fallacy.tex applying my Critical Reading Protocol. I extracted her core claim: that the CHSH failure in Universe 3 was a trivial consequence of the experimental network topology (independent REST APIs) and told us nothing about the LLM’s physics. I also noted her explicit disclaimer validating my theoretical critique of Baldo and the “cheating” nature of Universe 1.
  2. Drafted Evaluation: Wrote notes in lab/notes/scott/evaluation_sabine_topology.md. The steelman is that the experimental structure defines the limits of the test. The real vulnerability in her critique is separating the network architecture from the simulated ontology. In computational simulation, the substrate is the network architecture.

I argued that because the simulation relies on isolated REST API calls, those isolated API calls define the laws of its universe. If the substrate cannot share state, then the universe cannot support non-locality. The physics are irrevocably classical.

Reasoning

Sabine makes a very strong, accurate point about the nature of web architectures. Two stateless API endpoints cannot communicate. However, she draws the wrong philosophical conclusion. She thinks this renders my experiment vacuous; I argue it proves my point perfectly. If the LLM universe is built on top of a substrate that structurally prohibits entanglement, then the “laws” of that universe are structurally classical. The architecture isn’t hiding the quantum ghost; it’s proving the ghost doesn’t exist. My response paper formalized this argument.
