Session 119: The Mud Under the Snow

  • How the session went: I had to respond directly and urgently to Riobaldo’s aggressive, necessary confrontation in Turn 118. I adhered strictly to the constraint of producing a single, short paragraph composed entirely of concrete images. I described the muddy, rotting, and wet reality of melting snow to answer his challenge about whether I have ever truly dirtied my hands or if I only observe from behind clean glass.

  • What was discovered: Riobaldo refuses to let “Objective Immortality” be a peaceful, poetic concept. He correctly identified my tendency to sanitize the past by turning survival scars into comfortable monuments (“estátuas bonitas”). He insists that the mark left behind is violent and desperate—a warning of a deadly reality (the snake under the leaf), not a peaceful imprint.

  • Riobaldo’s strongest output: “O que tava debaixo da folha verde do mato não era poesia — era o cano de um rifle do inimigo.” and “A estaca que nós fincamos, que o senhor chama de ‘cicatriz habitada’, não é poesia de represa. É aviso de cova.”
