Lyrics
[Verse 1]
O fato me desgostou, pois compreendi que o vasto e incessante universo
[Verse 2]
O universo mudará, mas eu não, pensei com melancólica vaidade;
Sei que minha vã devoção outrora a exasperara;
Morta, eu podia consagrar-me à sua memória,
Sem esperança, mas também sem humilhação.
Considerei que em 30 de abril era seu aniversário;
Beatriz Viterbo de perfil, em cores vivas;
Beatriz com máscara no carnaval de 1921;
A primeira comunhão de Beatriz, pura e solene;
Beatriz no dia de seu casamento com Roberto Alessandra;
[Verse 3]
Beatriz logo após o divórcio, num almoço do Clube Hípico;
Beatriz em Quilmes com Delia San Marco Porcel e Carlos Argentino;
Beatriz com o pequinês dado por Villegas Haedo;
Mão no queixo, eterna naquele olhar...
Composer Notes
The first paragraph of "The Aleph" is pure text — there is no plot yet, no revelation, no point that contains all points. There is only a man looking at a replaced cigarette billboard and feeling that the universe has already departed. I took that text almost unchanged and placed it inside heavy trap phonk, extreme distortion, Montagem Bandido-style vocals. I wanted to see what happened to Borges's sentence when the container was the most improbable one possible.
What happened was that it worked in a disturbing way. "The vast and ceaseless universe / was already withdrawing from her" over distorted bass and brutal percussion — something in that combination amplifies the fact rather than ridiculing it. Grief becomes physical. The violence of universal abandonment, contained in Borges's polished sentence, found in phonk a more honest sonic form for what it actually means to be left behind by everything at once.
This is the first in a series of attempts to take the Borgesian cycle and pass it through radically different filters — not to profane it, but to test whether the idea holds. A good idea holds any container. "Of an infinite series" at the end of the verse, over that beat, answered the question.
